Learn More

  • A pediatric physical therapist assesses a child’s ability to maintain different body positions, transition between different body positions, move within the environment, and perform age-appropriate gross motor skills. They identify and treat the impairments that are interfering with these tasks, including (but not limited to) impaired range of motion, strength, posture, balance, coordination, proprioception, endurance, and vestibular function. They create a plan of care including specific goals aimed to improve a child’s level of functional mobility, participation in activities of daily living, and overall quality of life. Pediatric physical therapists also provide education to families and caregivers, assess equipment and orthotics/prosthetics needs, promote health and wellness, and collaborate with families, healthcare professionals, educational professionals, and developmental professionals.

Pediatric physical therapy can start as early as birth. If there are concerns or delays, the earlier a child begins physical therapy, the better.

  • In traditional therapy, the child may be seen 1-2 times per week for months at a time. In intensive therapy, the child is seen at an increased frequency for a shorter period of time (often daily for less than a month).

    • Increased repetition of specific movement patterns over a short period of time

    • Improved endurance

    • Improved quality of time spent in therapy

    • Improved confidence

    • Increased participation in the community

    • A more focused and proactive approach of promoting activity

  • “Dynamic Movement Intervention is the fastest growing, internationally recognized manual therapy technique that helps children reach their gross motor milestones. DMI harnesses the power of neuroplasticity to make rapid, long lasting changes in a child’s brain so they can learn new skills, reach their developmental milestones, and improve their quality of life in accordance with the ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health, WHO) framework.”
